Artist of the Month

Desiree Almodovar

Desiree Almodovar was born in 1985 in Puerto Rico, and grew up in Tampa FL. She received her BA in 2010 from Florida International University.

At first glance, her paintings seem to mirror the surrealists fascination with the subconscious. However, Desiree consciously chooses subject matter reflective of magical events in her life. Viewers are transported into enigmatic worlds where the rides and paths of life await them. Her influences include Bosch, Inka Essenhigh and Camille Rose Garcia.

Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries, including Tampa Museum of Art and Area 23 Gallery. She currently lives and works in Miami FL.

Preparing to Cross the Pond

By The Guardian’s Ian Gittins:

“Their appeal is not hard to understand. They play charming, witty pop songs shot through with Jonathan Richman’s gawky glee and Suede’s doomed provincial romanticism. If Jarvis Cocker were to sing with the Modern Lovers, he might produce a song like Leave the Scene Behind, a piquant account of being brusquely rejected by a beautiful social climber…”

The Writing on the Wall

From the CCCV Blog, article by John Hood:
“If you live in Dade County, you’ve seen the tags everywhere: a blocked stencil, a starred sticker, a dashed black marker or a swift spray of paint. AHOL. SNIFFS. GLUE. But signing his nom de guerre to the city he loves is only a part of what this Miami born and bred visualist does in the wild world. The rest, as they say, is suitable for framing…”

What are you doing here?
What do you want?
Is it music?
We can play music.
But you want more.
You want something & someone new.
Am I right?
Of course I am.
You want ecstasy
Desire & dreams.
Things not exactly what they seem.
I lead you this way, he pulls that way.
I'm not singing to an imaginary girl.
I'm talking to you, my self.
Let's recreate the world.
The palace of conception is burning.
Look. See it burn.
Bask in the warm hot coals.
You're too young to be old
You don't need to be told
You want to see things as they are.
You know exactly what I do
Everything
- Jim Morrison
